The French River is a favourite of beginner and experienced backcountry canoeists alike. Its rugged landscape, windswept pines, easy to reach road access options, and choice of routes make it a popular trip. Paddle the route of Indigenous peoples, Samuel de Champlain, and 18th century fur traders. The park offers 286 backcountry campsites accessible only by boat, canoe or kayak. There are no car campsites in the park. Designated campsites and portages are clearly signed and can be found on the official park map which is available for purchase at the French River Visitor Centre. Some campsites are not outfitted with a privy due to the local geology and topography. Otter Bay is the only access point located within French River Provincial Park. All other access to the park is through private businesses or public boat launches. Vehicle parking at private businesses or public boat launches is not included with the purchase of a park permit as these locations are not within the park. Ontario Parks is not responsible for any additional fees incurred or the hours of operation at these privately-operated access points.
